PRESS RELEASE

March 5, 2015

After five years with no homicides, the Coosa County Sheriff’s Office on Monday found itself faced with the county’s first homicide since February 2010. At approximately 10 a.m. March 2, the Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from Lodis Lane in the Weogufka community. Deputies responded to the call concerning a deceased person. Upon their arrival, Coosa deputies began a death investigation, notified Sheriff Terry Wilson and called for additional assistance to the scene.

The deceased, 43-year-old Gregory Wayne Parker, a white male, of Lodis Lane was apparently shot to death. Because of the suspicious nature of the scene, the Sheriff’s team determined that a homicide had occurred and called out other agencies for assistance, including the State Bureau of Investigations and the Talladega County Drug Task Force, which Wilson said were a tremendous help.

The crime scene was preserved, processed and evidence was collected; an intense investigation uncovered several leads and the primary suspects were identified and two individuals were arrested for murder within hours of the crime being committed.

Those taken into custody that night were 21-year-old Charles Claude Oden of Childersburg and 19-year-old Kaylyn Shana Sims of the Stewartville community, near Sylacauga. Both were charged with murder.

In continuing the investigation, another individual was also arrested the next day in connection with the case. On Tuesday, 25-year-old Casandra Lynn Johnston Tampling of Childersburg was arrested for Theft of Property Second degree.

Bonds were set at $300,000 for Oden; $250,000 for Sims; and $50,000 for Tampling. As of press time all three remained in custody at the Coosa County Jail. No further information was available as the case remains an ongoing investigation.

“I appreciate the immediate hard work provided by my team, the Talladega Drug Task Force and the State Bureau of Investigation in solving this homicide so quickly,” Sheriff Wilson stated. “I want to let the family know our thoughts and prayers are with them through this troubling time in their lives.”
